About

The Flag Cichlid (Laetacara curviceps) is a small, elegant cichlid native to the lower and middle Amazon River basin in Brazil and adjacent South American lowlands. It inhabits slow-moving, heavily vegetated river margins, oxbow lakes, and flooded forest areas where soft, slightly acidic water with dense plant cover provides food and shelter.

Males display a distinctive high dorsal fin that they erect prominently during courtship and territorial displays — the behavior that gives the species its common name. Body coloration is a warm blend of blue-green iridescence with yellow-golden tones on the belly, and faint dark markings along the flanks. During breeding condition, both sexes develop intensified coloration including richer blues and greens in males and a rosy flush on females.

As a small cichlid reaching only 7–8 cm, Flag Cichlids fit comfortably in moderately sized aquariums. They are notably gentle toward plants, rarely causing the substrate upheaval or plant destruction associated with larger cichlid species. This makes them exceptional candidates for planted aquariums where most cichlids would wreak havoc.

Flag Cichlids are bi-parental substrate spawners with excellent parental instincts. They clean flat stones or broad plant leaves before depositing eggs and vigorously defend their territory and developing fry — impressive behavior to observe from such small fish. Breeding pairs work collaboratively and rarely show aggression toward non-threatening tankmates outside the immediate spawning area.

Care Guide

Flag Cichlids thrive in soft, slightly acidic water: pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 2–12 dGH, and temperatures 22–28°C. Soft, slightly acidic water closely matching Amazon conditions produces the best coloration and most reliable breeding results.

A minimum 80-liter densely planted aquarium suits a pair well. Broad-leaved Anubias, Amazon swords, and Echinodorus species provide ideal spawning surfaces. Supplement with flat stones, driftwood, and fine sand substrate. A dark background enhances coloration contrast.

Feed quality micro-cichlid pellets, high-quality flake, and varied live or frozen foods: small earthworms, cyclops, daphnia, small brine shrimp, and bloodworms. Feed twice daily in moderate amounts. Coloration improves notably with regularly varied diet.

Flag Cichlids coexist peacefully with most community species: small to medium tetras, rasboras, corydoras, armored catfish, peaceful loaches, and other non-aggressive cichlids. They are too gentle to defend themselves against aggressive fish and should not be housed with boisterous or nippy species.

During spawning periods, a modest exclusion zone forms around the breeding site, but this rarely affects tankmates outside the immediate area. Water changes of 25–30% weekly with temperature-matched water often trigger spawning behavior.
