Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus
Origin: Amazon River basin, Brazil
The Flag Tetra (Hyphessobrycon heterorhabdus) is a beautiful three-banded tetra from the Amazon River basin featuring a distinctive tricolor horizontal stripe of red, gold, and black running from snout to tail. It inhabits slow-moving, dark-stained blackwater streams and thrives in aquariums with leaf litter, peat filtration, and subdued lighting. A peaceful schooling species ideal for biotope setups.
Maintain in soft, acidic blackwater conditions with Indian almond leaves or peat. Dense planting, leaf litter, and dim lighting replicate natural habitat. Keep in schools of 8+. Feed micro-pellets, flake, daphnia, artemia. The tricolor stripe intensifies in ideal conditions. Avoid bright lighting and hard alkaline water.
