Neocirrhites armatus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Neocirrhites armatus — the flame hawkfish — is a compact, vividly red fish with a black dorsal stripe and black eye ring. Hawkfish lack a swim bladder and rest on coral or rock surfaces ('perching'). The flame hawkfish is particularly prized but must be considered carefully for reef tanks as it will eat small crustaceans (cleaner shrimp, peppermint shrimp). Best kept in a FOWLR or reef without valuable small invertebrates.
Light: any. Flow: moderate. Feed: meaty foods, mysis, krill, whole shrimp. NOT reef-safe with shrimp and small crustaceans. Bold personality — may bully smaller fish.
