Origin: Brazil (coastal rivers near Rio de Janeiro)
Hyphessobrycon flammeus, the Flame or Von Rio Tetra, has been a hobby staple since the 1920s. Native to coastal rivers near Rio de Janeiro, it displays warm orange-red body coloration that intensifies dramatically in soft, slightly acidic water. Two faint dark shoulder bars add contrast. A peaceful, undemanding species that thrives in planted community aquariums.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 5.8–7.5, soft water intensifies red pigmentation. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted with open swimming space; dark substrate recommended. Feeding: Accepts flake, micro-pellets, frozen daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling species; keep 8+; active mid-water swimmer. Compatibility: Good with other small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, corydoras, and shrimp.
