Hyphessobrycon flammeus
Also known as: Flame Tetra, Red Tetra, Rio Tetra
Origin: Brazil (Rio de Janeiro state)
Hyphessobrycon flammeus, the Flame Tetra, has graced aquariums since the 1920s, making it one of the earliest tetras introduced to the hobby. Its body glows a rich crimson-red, deepening toward the tail, with contrasting black pigmentation in the dorsal and anal fins of mature fish. Males intensify in color during courtship and rivalry displays. Despite its ornate appearance, this species is exceptionally hardy and tolerant of a broad range of water parameters, making it ideal for beginners and experienced aquarists alike. A school of twelve or more creates a brilliant, shimmering display in any planted aquarium. It is omnivorous and readily accepts flake, micro-pellet, and frozen foods.
Water: Prefers soft to moderately hard water, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–28 °C. Tolerates tap water but thrives with slight acidity. Tank: Minimum 40 L; dense planting along sides and back with open mid-water swimming space. Dark substrate enhances red coloration. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts quality flake, micro-pellet, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; spawns readily over fine-leaved plants or spawning mop in slightly acidic soft water. Remove adults after spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with all similarly sized community fish. Avoid housing with large predators or aggressive fin-nippers.
