About

The Flameback Victorian is a trade name for a Haplochromis species or complex from Lake Victoria characterised by its vivid orange-red dorsal colouration set against a metallic blue body. It is a maternal mouthbrooder that thrives in a rock-and-sand Lake Victoria biotope. Like most Victorian cichlids, it is threatened in the wild and captive breeding is encouraged.

Care Guide

Water: 23-26°C, pH 7.5-8.5, moderately hard alkaline water; weekly 25% water changes. Tank: Minimum 150L; rocky formation with sandy areas; slight current beneficial. Feeding: Omnivore diet of quality pellets, spirulina, and frozen invertebrate foods. Behaviour: Males territorial during spawning; females hold fry for 3-4 weeks; provide refuge for holding females. Compatibility: Victorian biotope tank; pairs well with other Victorian haplochromines of similar temperament.
