Synodontis pleurops
Also known as: Flathead Synodontis, Flathead Squeaker
Origin: Congo Basin
Synodontis pleurops possesses a markedly flattened head and forebody that allows it to squeeze into tight rock crevices and beneath flat stones, a specialisation for the rocky sections of the Congo River where it is native. This body plan is quite distinct among aquarium Synodontis and makes it immediately recognisable.
In the aquarium it is a nocturnal species that will remain hidden for much of the day unless given a setup mimicking its rocky native habitat with many tight horizontal gaps between flat rocks. Once settled and secure, it is a reliable feeder and a robust aquarium fish.
Given its moderate adult size and peaceful nature it can be maintained alongside medium to large community fish, cichlids and other catfish.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 4–14, KH 1–8). Tank: 200 L minimum; flat rocks stacked to create horizontal crevices; sandy base; moderate to good flow. Feeding: Sinking pellets and wafers placed near crevice entrances; frozen bloodworm and mysis. Breeding: Not documented in home aquaria; presumed cave/crevice spawner. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium to large community fish; may compete for flat-rock territories.
