Sinularia flexibilis
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Sinularia flexibilis lives up to its name with exceptionally long, highly flexible, smooth branches that sway and undulate gracefully in water flow, bringing dynamic, living movement to the reef aquarium. Its colonies can grow impressively tall over time, making it a natural choice for the background or mid-tank position in larger reef systems where its swaying silhouette creates a captivating focal point. Like most Sinularia species, it is photosynthetic (zooxanthellate) and derives most of its nutrition from light, though it will also absorb dissolved organics and small particulate matter from the water column. It is one of the more accessible and fast-growing soft corals available, making it excellent for beginners building their first reef. Note that Sinularia produces chemical compounds (terpenes) that can inhibit the growth of nearby stony corals — ensure good filtration and activated carbon use.
Position in moderate to strong water flow to maximize the swaying movement of its branches and keep polyps aerated. Provide medium to high lighting. Perform regular water changes and use activated carbon in filtration to neutralize allelopathic compounds released into the water. Allow at least 10–15 cm of clearance from neighboring corals, especially stony corals. Feed dissolved reef foods to supplement photosynthesis in lower-light conditions.
