Hybrid cichlid (various)
Also known as: Flowerhorn, Flowerhorn Cichlid, Hua Luo Han
Origin: Captive bred hybrid (developed in Malaysia and Taiwan)
The Flowerhorn Cichlid is a hybrid species developed in Malaysia and Taiwan during the 1990s through selective crossing of several Central and South American cichlid species, most notably Amphilophus trimaculatus, Amphilophus citrinellus, and Vieja synspila. The result is a highly artificial but striking fish with no wild counterpart, bred specifically for ornamental appeal and personality.
The most defining feature of the Flowerhorn is the prominent nuchal hump (locally called the 'kok') on the forehead of mature individuals, particularly males. This hump is considered a mark of quality and beauty in Flowerhorn culture, where large, symmetrical humps are highly prized. The body is typically vivid red, pink, or orange with a row of black oval spots along the midlateral line and iridescent blue-green scaling.
Multiple strains and varieties exist, including the Kamfa, Zhen Zhu (Pearl Flowerhorn), King Kong Parrot, and Golden Monkey variants, each with different proportions, patterning, and hump development. All share the same aggressive, territorial nature and remarkable owner recognition ability.
Flowerhorns are highly intelligent cichlids that actively interact with their keeper. They follow movement, beg for food, and respond to tapping on the glass. Because of their extreme aggression toward conspecifics and most other fish, they are almost always kept alone in dedicated single-specimen setups.
Tank Setup A single Flowerhorn requires a minimum 300-liter aquarium; males, which grow larger, need even more space. Keep bare-bottom or use coarse gravel — bare bottoms are easier to clean and many keepers prefer them for hygiene. Furnish minimally: a few large smooth rocks or a PVC pipe cave are sufficient. Flowerhorns will destroy any planting or delicate décor. Use a powerful canister filter rated well above the tank volume.
Water Parameters Maintain temperature 25–30°C, pH 6.5–7.8. Flowerhorns are tolerant of a range of water conditions, which partly accounts for their popularity with beginners. GH 8–20 and KH 4–12 are suitable. Perform 30% water changes twice weekly due to their heavy bioload and waste production. Monitor ammonia and nitrite closely; even brief spikes cause health problems.
Feeding Carnivorous; feed high-quality large cichlid pellets or Flowerhorn-specific pellets formulated to enhance color and hump development. Supplement with frozen krill, prawns, and earthworms. Feed once or twice daily; do not overfeed. Overfeeding leads to excessive waste and potential digestive issues. Carotenoid-rich foods help maintain vibrant red and orange coloration.
Tankmates Flowerhorns are almost exclusively kept alone. Their extreme aggression makes them incompatible with virtually any other fish. In very large tanks, attempts have been made to keep them with large armored catfish such as Plecos, but success is variable and the catfish must be monitored closely for injuries.
Health Generally hardy but prone to lateral line disease under poor water conditions and to digestive issues if fed improperly. Maintain excellent water quality and avoid feeding cheap, low-quality foods. The nuchal hump may shrink under stress or poor conditions; a healthy hump is a sign of good overall husbandry.
