Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus
Origin: Southeast Asia
Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus, the Flying Fox, is a streamlined algae-eating cyprinid from fast-flowing rivers in Southeast Asia. Unlike the similar-looking Siamese Algae Eater (SAE), the Flying Fox has a more pronounced dark stripe and colourful fin markings. It is particularly effective at consuming black brush algae (BBA) and green spot algae on leaves and driftwood. Somewhat territorial as an adult; best kept as a single specimen or in a very large, well-decorated tank with ample territory.
Single specimen recommended. Temperature 24–26 °C. Strong flow preferred. Feed algae wafers, sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm. One of the few fish effective against BBA. Do not confuse with false flying fox (Garra cambodgiensis). Requires 150+ L.
