Cyathopharynx foae
Also known as: Foae's Featherfin, Foae Featherfin Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Foae's Featherfin is closely related to the more common Cyathopharynx furcifer but originates from different populations of Lake Tanganyika. Males in full breeding colour are among the most breathtaking of all cichlids, with their elongated pelvic fin filaments used in an elaborate lek spawning display. Females collect eggs and carry them as maternal mouthbrooders.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; clean, well-oxygenated conditions essential. Tank: Minimum 300L; large sandy open area for lek spawning display; minimal obstruction. Feeding: Fine floating and sinking planktivore foods — frozen cyclops, mysis, brine shrimp, and small pellets. Behaviour: Males build sand pits for spawning display; competition between males is visual rather than violent. Compatibility: Peaceful Tanganyika community; excellent with Cyprichromis and sand cichlids.
