Betta foerschi
Origin: Central and South Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia
Betta foerschi is a mouthbrooding wild betta from the peat swamps of Central and South Kalimantan, Borneo, inhabiting extremely soft and acidic blackwater conditions. Males are beautifully patterned with alternating dark and pale bands running along the body and bold red marks in the fins. Challenging to keep due to strict water chemistry requirements but rewards dedicated hobbyists with fascinating breeding behaviour.
Maintain in extremely soft, very acidic blackwater (pH 3.5–5.5) using RO water with peat or Indian almond leaves. Keep as a pair in a species tank. Feed live and frozen meaty micro-foods. During mouthbrooding do not disturb the male — this species is a paternal mouthbrooder. Advanced species for blackwater betta specialists only.
