Hemiloricaria formosa
Also known as: Formosa Hemiloricaria, Beautiful Whiptail Catfish
Origin: South America (Paraguay — Paraguay River drainage)
Hemiloricaria formosa is native to the Paraguay River drainage and is one of the more visually striking members of its genus, with neat lateral striping and comparatively graceful fin proportions. The Paraguay River basin is a broad lowland system subject to extensive seasonal flooding, and Hemiloricaria formosa is adapted to the variable conditions this produces — tolerating a moderate range of water temperatures and chemistry.
In the aquarium, this species is somewhat more adaptable than Guiana Shield specialists and will settle comfortably into a range of South American community setups. It is a calm, undemanding species that requires the standard whiptail care — clean water, sand substrate, adequate shelter, and a plant-based diet supplemented with algae wafers.
Hemiloricaria formosa has been bred in captivity and its attractive patterning makes it a desirable species for breeders. Males guard eggs deposited in sheltered sites, and fry are straightforward to raise on blanched vegetables and fine algae-based fry foods.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15); adaptable to seasonal fluctuation. Tank: 80 L minimum; sand substrate; tubes and driftwood; open and planted areas. Feeding: Algae wafers, blanched zucchini and spinach, spirulina. Breeding: Tube or crevice spawner; male guards; fry easy to raise. Compatibility: Peaceful La Plata or general South American community fish.
