Paracirrhites forsteri
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Forster's Hawkfish (Paracirrhites forsteri), also known as the Freckled Hawkfish, is one of the largest hawkfish species commonly available in the marine hobby, and one of the most assertive. Its base coloration varies regionally from yellowish-brown to deep red with a distinctive dense pattern of brown freckles on the head and a darker posterior half. Like all hawkfish, it lacks a swim bladder and instead perches prominently on live rock, coral heads, and elevated structures to survey its territory, launching rapid strikes at passing prey. Its bold personality and striking size make it an ideal centerpiece fish for larger FOWLR and reef systems where aggressive, dramatic behavior is appreciated. Not suitable for tanks with small shrimp, small fish, or nano inhabitants.
Provide at least 250 liters with large, prominent perching structures such as elevated rocks and branching coral frames. Feed with meaty foods twice daily: frozen mysis, marine shrimp, whole krill, and marine pellets. Do not combine with small, passive fish or ornamental shrimp — Forster's Hawkfish will eat them. Can be kept with robust fish of similar or larger size. Generally reef-safe with stony corals but will prey on crustaceans and very small fish.
