Hemichromis frempongi
Also known as: Frempongi Jewel Cichlid
Origin: West Africa (Ghana)
Hemichromis frempongi is endemic to Ghana and is infrequently seen in the aquarium trade, making it a prized acquisition for jewel cichlid enthusiasts. It displays rich red body colouration densely covered in teal iridescent spots. Care requirements are similar to H. bimaculatus, with particular attention needed during the highly aggressive breeding phase.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to medium hardness preferred. Tank: Minimum 100L; sturdy rock structures, caves, and driftwood. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworms, and occasional live food. Behaviour: Open spawner; territorial aggression escalates dramatically when breeding. Compatibility: Species pair tank preferred; can coexist with large robust tankmates outside breeding season.
