Crenicichla frenata
Also known as: Frenata Pike Cichlid, Banded-cheek Pike Cichlid
Origin: Guiana Shield drainages, Venezuela to lower Amazon
Crenicichla frenata is one of the more widespread Crenicichla of the Guiana Shield, found across multiple drainages from Venezuela through Suriname to the lower Amazon. Its most conspicuous feature is a bold, continuous dark band running from the tip of the snout through the eye all the way to the caudal peduncle — more complete and continuous than in many related species.
This species is a robust, adaptable predator that handles a range of captive conditions reasonably well, though soft, slightly acidic water is still preferred. In the wild it inhabits both clear and lightly blackwater river systems, giving it a broader tolerance than strict blackwater specialists. A tank of 250 litres with driftwood, sand, and cave structures suits a pair.
C. frenata is a proven aquarium fish with a history in European cichlid collections. It breeds readily in a well-conditioned species tank, exhibiting the typical Crenicichla cave-spawning behaviour with strong biparental guarding of eggs and fry. A solid species for building experience with larger pike cichlids.
Water: Soft to medium-hard (pH 5.5–7.2) at 24–28°C; adaptable but soft water preferred. Tank: 250 L with driftwood, sandy areas, and multiple caves for territorial delineation. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and cichlid pellets; a good feeder that adapts easily. Breeding: Cave spawner with strong biparental care; a relatively straightforward Crenicichla to breed. Compatibility: Keep with robust, large fish only; ideal as a bonded species pair.
