Tetraodontidae spp.
Also known as: Freshwater Blowfish, Freshwater Puffer
Origin: Southeast Asia and South Asia
Various species of small-to-medium Asian Tetraodontidae are sold under the generic 'Freshwater Blowfish' trade name, most commonly comprising Dichotomyctere or Pao species. These fish share common care requirements: hard-shelled invertebrate prey, excellent water quality, and species-only housing. Buyers should request scientific identification when possible to ensure appropriate long-term care.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; clean conditions with strong filtration. Tank: Minimum 100 L; planted setup with open areas and hiding spots. Feeding: Snails, mussels, clams, bloodworm, and brine shrimp; variety is essential. Behaviour: Aggressive fin-nipper regardless of specific species — treat all as species-only. Compatibility: Species-only; do not mix with other fish until species is confirmed.
