Corbicula fluminea
Origin: Asia (widely naturalized in Europe and North America)
Corbicula fluminea, the Freshwater Clam or Asian Clam, is a compact and hardy bivalve mollusc that earns its place in the aquarium or garden pond as one of the most effective biological water clarifiers available. It buries itself partially in substrate and draws water through its siphons, filtering out suspended algae particles, bacteria, phytoplankton, and fine organic detritus — making it particularly effective at clearing green water (free-floating algae bloom) and improving overall water clarity. For ponds and large aquariums struggling with turbidity or chronic green water, several clams working together can achieve remarkable results. Best kept in groups of three or more in well-established, mature systems.
Plant into fine sand or soft substrate with just the siphon area exposed. Requires a mature, established aquarium or pond with sufficient suspended particulate matter to feed on — supplement with liquid invertebrate foods or phytoplankton concentrate if natural food is limited. Needs well-oxygenated water and regular water changes. Sensitive to ammonia and copper-based medications. Keep in groups of 3 or more. Inspect regularly — deceased clams release ammonia rapidly and must be removed immediately.
