Ferrissia rivularis
Also known as: Freshwater Limpet, River Limpet
Origin: North America
Ferrissia rivularis is a small, cap-shaped freshwater limpet found attached to rocks, glass, and driftwood in clean, well-oxygenated rivers. Its flattened form allows it to graze directly on biofilm and soft algae without dislodging. It is an unusual, peaceful addition to biotope setups and requires minimal care.
Water: 15–25°C, pH 6.5–8.0; clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate calcium levels. Tank: Minimum 20L with smooth hard surfaces; thrives in biotope or planted setups with established biofilm. Feeding: Feeds on biofilm and soft algae growing directly on smooth hard substrates. Behaviour: Sedentary; clings to surfaces using muscular foot; moves slowly between grazing patches. Compatibility: Completely peaceful with all fish, shrimp, and invertebrates.
