Gymnothorax tile
Also known as: Freshwater Moray Eel, Indian Mud Moray, Brackish Moray
Origin: South Asia
Gymnothorax tile is an euryhaline moray eel encountered in estuaries and tidal rivers across South and Southeast Asia. It tolerates fully fresh water for short periods but thrives in brackish conditions, and it is an enthusiastic escape artist requiring a very secure, gapless lid. Its dentition means any tankmates small enough to swallow will eventually be eaten.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, brackish 1.005-1.010 SG; does not thrive long-term in pure freshwater. Tank: Minimum 300L, multiple secure cave hiding spots covering the full length, 100% sealed lid. Feeding: Carnivore; whole prawns, mussel, small fish, squid; best fed with tongs after dark. Behaviour: Predatory and secretive; remains hidden during daylight, actively hunts at night. Compatibility: Only with large, robust brackish species; gobies, large archerfish, or solo.
