Anodonta cygnea
Also known as: Freshwater Mussel, Swan Mussel
Origin: Europe / Asia
Anodonta cygnea is a large native European freshwater mussel that acts as a powerful biological water polisher, drawing water through its siphons and filtering out suspended algae, bacteria, and organic particles. It is particularly effective at clearing green water blooms. This species requires fine sand to partially bury itself, good oxygenation, and cooler temperatures than most tropical species. It is a specialist addition for ponds and large temperate aquariums.
Water: 10–22°C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18, KH 4–10; well oxygenated; avoid high nitrates. Tank: minimum 80 L, fine sand substrate 5+ cm deep for burrowing; strong filtration. Feeding: phytoplankton, suspended organics, powdered invertebrate food added to flow. Behaviour: stationary filter feeder; buries partially in substrate; non-mobile. Compatibility: peaceful; safe with cool-water fish; avoid tropical temperatures.
