Anodonta/Sinanodonta sp.
Origin: Europe (native)
Freshwater Mussels of the genera Anodonta and Sinanodonta are large, native European bivalves found throughout Belgian and Dutch rivers, lakes, and canals. They are among the most effective natural water filters available for large ponds and aquariums, drawing water through their siphons at rates of several liters per hour and filtering out bacteria, fine particulate matter, suspended algae, and phytoplankton in the process. Their flat, elongated shells can grow impressively large over time and provide a naturalistic focal point in ponds and biotope systems designed around native European aquatic life. They require a mature, well-established environment with a plankton-rich water column or supplemental liquid invertebrate food to survive long-term in captivity.
Plant into fine, deep sand or soft mud substrate, leaving the siphon end just exposed. The aquarium or pond must be mature and well-established with abundant suspended food particles. Supplement with liquid phytoplankton or dedicated invertebrate liquid food regularly — mussels quickly decline in nutrient-poor filtered water. Requires excellent water quality with good oxygenation. Keep at cooler temperatures (10–22°C). Inspect regularly for decline and remove immediately upon death. Not recommended for heavily filtered systems with very low particle loads.
