Fungia sp.
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Fungia species are extraordinary free-living solitary LPS corals forming single, flattened discs covered in radiating septa and retractable polyp tissue. Unlike attached corals, Fungia can inflate itself with water to right itself if overturned and can even relocate slowly across a sand bed. The green form is one of the most common in trade and is a visually striking, low-demand addition to reef aquariums.
Medium PAR (100–250). Place on sand bed in moderate indirect flow — direct strong flow causes retraction and can flip the disc. Alk 8–10 dKH, Ca 400–450 ppm, temp 24–27°C. Target feed 2–3× weekly with meaty foods placed directly on the coral disc — Fungia is an aggressive feeder and will engulf surprisingly large pieces of food. Do not place near other corals — tentacles extend at night. Do not stack; each plate needs clear space around it.
