Amphiprion fuscocaudatus
Origin: Seychelles, Aldabra Atoll
Amphiprion fuscocaudatus, the Seychelles Clownfish or Dark-Fin Clownfish, is one of the rarest and most geographically restricted clownfish in the world, endemic exclusively to the Seychelles archipelago and Aldabra Atoll in the Indian Ocean. Its orange body carries two white bars (similar to some other Amphiprion species) but is distinguished by a uniquely dark-tipped caudal fin that gives rise to its scientific name — fuscocaudatus meaning 'dark-tailed'. Its extremely limited natural distribution means export numbers are low and captive specimens are rarely available, making it a prized and exclusive addition to serious marine aquarium collections. Care requirements follow typical clownfish protocols but its rarity warrants extra attention to water quality and diet.
Provide at least 100 liters with a compatible host anemone (Stichodactyla mertensii or gigantea preferred) or suitable surrogate. Feed twice daily with frozen mysis, marine pellets, and quality clownfish preparations. Maintain excellent water quality; stable parameters are particularly important for this rare species. Best kept as a bonded pair — the larger individual will be female. Avoid housing with aggressive species that may stress this relatively peaceful fish.
