Aphyosemion gabunense
Also known as: Gabon Lyretail, Gabunense Killifish
Origin: Gabon
Aphyosemion gabunense is a non-annual killifish from forest streams and pools in Gabon, related to the famous Cape Lopez Lyretail (A. australe) but displaying its own distinct colouration. Males have iridescent blue-green body colouration with vivid red spotting across the flanks, and the flowing lyretail caudal fin adds elegance to their display. Several geographic colour forms are known, each with subtle but distinct colouration.
A. gabunense is a relatively undemanding killifish suitable for an intermediate keeper. It prefers soft, slightly acidic water and a well-planted 40 L species tank. Eggs are deposited on fine-leaved plants or a yarn mop and hatch after two to three weeks in damp peat. The species is peaceful and can be kept in a quiet community of small, calm fish.
This species offers the charm and elegance of a lyretail Aphyosemion without the common ubiquity of A. australe. Its geographic colour variation makes it a rewarding long-term project for keepers who enjoy working with multiple population strains.
Water: 20–24 °C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft water (GH 2–8) preferred. Tank: 40 L species or quiet community tank with plants and a spawning mop. Feeding: Live and frozen Artemia, Daphnia, bloodworm; feed once or twice daily. Breeding: Collect eggs from spawning mop weekly; incubate in damp peat for 2–3 weeks. Compatibility: Peaceful with small, calm community fish; avoid large or nippy species.
