Galaxea fascicularis
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Red Sea
Galaxea fascicularis, the Galaxy Coral or Crystal Coral, is one of the most visually striking LPS corals available, forming encrusting to mounding colonies studded with distinctive tubular corallites. Each corallite houses a polyp that expands during the day into an elegant starburst of white-tipped green or brown tentacles — a display that has given the species its galaxy-inspired common name. Under reef lighting, green morphs in particular can display intense fluorescence. However, Galaxea is among the most aggressive corals in the hobby, deploying some of the longest sweeper tentacles of any reef coral — these tentacles can extend 20–30 cm or more at night and will sting and kill tissue from neighboring corals and sessile invertebrates. Careful placement with very generous spacing is absolutely essential to prevent reef warfare.
Place in a location with at least 30 cm clearance in all directions from any neighboring corals — Galaxea sweeper tentacles can cause serious damage to corals that seem comfortably far away. Position under medium light with moderate, indirect flow. Target feed weekly with Reef-Roids, mysis, or LPS coral paste. Monitor neighboring corals carefully when first introduced. Maintain standard reef chemistry. Can be an incredibly rewarding long-term centerpiece specimen when correctly sited.
