About

The Gardneri Killifish (Fundulopanchax gardneri) is a non-annual killifish from Nigeria and Cameroon in West Africa, inhabiting slow-moving forest streams, swampy pools, and seasonal ponds in the Niger Delta and surrounding regions. Unlike annual killifish species, Gardneri Killifish do not require dry spells and can live for 2–4 years under good aquarium conditions.

Males are magnificently colored — the body is steel blue to teal-green overlaid with a dense pattern of vivid red-orange spots across the flanks and fins. The caudal fin may be lyre-shaped in some strains, with upper and lower fin rays extending into elegant points. The dorsal fin is also spotted and may have yellow edging. Multiple geographic variants exist, each with slightly different color intensities and fin shapes.

Females are considerably less colorful — brown-olive with faint spotting — but are essential for spawning. Breeders typically maintain a ratio of one male to two or more females.

In the wild, Gardneri Killifish are found in a variety of habitat types from clear forest streams to murky, oxygen-depleted pools where their labyrinthine adaptation to surface air breathing would be valuable. This adaptability makes them exceptionally hardy in captivity.

As egg scatterers that deposit adhesive eggs in fine-leaved plants or peat moss, they are straightforward to breed in a dedicated spawning setup. Eggs may be incubated in moist peat or removed to a separate hatching container.

Care Guide

Gardneri Killifish are among the most adaptable killifish species, tolerating pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 5–15 dGH, and temperatures 20–24°C. They prefer slightly cooler temperatures than most tropical fish, making them suitable for unheated indoor tanks in temperate climates during summer.

A small dedicated tank of 30–60 liters suits a pair or trio well. Provide a dark substrate, floating plants (Riccia, Java moss, Hornwort), and dim lighting. Killifish are renowned escape artists — a tight-fitting lid with no gaps is absolutely essential.

Feed a varied diet of high-quality micro pellets, flake food, and generous supplements of live or frozen foods: daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworms, micro worms, and tubifex. Killifish thrive on varied, protein-rich diets and show best coloration when fed live and frozen foods regularly.

Gardneri Killifish may be mildly aggressive toward conspecific males and may chase females excessively. Maintain a higher ratio of females to males (2:1 or more) and provide plenty of cover for females to rest. They can coexist with peaceful small community species but are best appreciated in a species or killifish-focused setup.

For breeding, provide Java moss or fine-leaved plants, or a small container of moist peat moss. Collect and incubate eggs separately if raising fry is desired. Fry can be fed micro worms and baby brine shrimp.
