Hemigrammus pulcher
Also known as: Garnet Tetra, Pretty Tetra, Black-wedge Tetra
Origin: Brazil (Rio Negro basin)
Hemigrammus pulcher, often referred to as the Garnet or Pretty Tetra, originates from the Rio Negro basin in Brazil. Its deep red-garnet lower flanks contrast with a sparkling blue-green iridescent stripe and a distinctive dark shoulder blotch. Colour intensity is highly dependent on water quality and pH, reaching its peak in very soft, slightly acidic, tannin-rich blackwater conditions.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 4.5–6.5, very soft blackwater enhances deep red colouring. Tank: 40 L minimum; blackwater setup with peat filtration, catappa leaves and dark substrate. Feeding: Micro-pellets, baby brine shrimp, micro-worms and small frozen invertebrates. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling nano species; keep 8+; somewhat shy until established. Compatibility: Best with other blackwater nano fish — small pencilfish, nano tetras, pygmy corydoras.
