Crenicichla gaucho
Also known as: Gaucho Pike Cichlid, Rio dos Sinos Pike Cichlid
Origin: Rio dos Sinos, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Crenicichla gaucho is a beautifully patterned pike cichlid endemic to the Rio dos Sinos in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. It is one of several highly colourful small-to-medium pike cichlids from this biologically rich but increasingly threatened river system. In breeding condition, both males and females develop striking orange-red pigmentation, bold dark spotting, and iridescent scale margins that make this species genuinely spectacular.
As a southern Brazilian species, C. gaucho tolerates and even prefers cooler temperatures than typical Amazonian Crenicichla — 18–26°C is the ideal range, with the cooler end appropriate for much of the year. A seasonal temperature drop can help trigger breeding activity. The species inhabits clear, well-oxygenated stream environments over sandy and rocky substrates.
At 20 cm, C. gaucho requires a 200 L aquarium with sandy substrate, smooth stones, and driftwood cover. Its conservation status is of concern due to habitat loss in the Rio dos Sinos catchment, making captive breeding efforts by hobbyists particularly valuable.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5 at 18–26°C; cooler temperatures important — do not keep at sustained 28°C+. Tank: 200 L with sandy substrate, flat stones, and driftwood; good filtration and oxygenation. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and cichlid pellets; earthworms particularly appreciated. Breeding: Cave spawner; seasonal temperature drop to 18–20°C followed by gradual rise helps trigger spawning. Compatibility: Cool-water South American biotope; no small fish.
