Geayi Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla geayi is one of the most well-known and longest-established pike cichlids in the European aquarium hobby, widely exported from Venezuela and Guyana since the 1980s. It inhabits rivers of the Orinoco basin and coastal Guiana drainages, typically in shallow, vegetated margins and rocky stretches. The classic lateral stripe, spotted dorsal fin, and robust constitution have made it a standard recommendation for aquarists entering the Crenicichla hobby.

At 22 cm C. geayi is a manageable mid-sized predator for a 220 L tank. It tolerates a reasonably wide range of water conditions by Crenicichla standards, though soft, slightly acidic conditions are still optimal. The species is most comfortable with sand substrate, driftwood shelter, and some root tangle providing visual breaks between territories.

Breeding C. geayi is achievable in a species tank. The pair engages in intense pre-spawning displays, eventually depositing eggs in a cave or on a flat surface. Both parents guard eggs and fry vigorously. This species is an excellent starting point for aquarists new to keeping larger Crenicichla.

Water: Soft to moderately hard (pH 5.5–7.2) at 24–28°C; adaptable to many tap water conditions. Tank: 220 L with sand, driftwood, and flat rocks; moderate décor density. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and quality cichlid pellets; one of the easier pike cichlids to feed. Breeding: Cave or flat-surface spawner; biparental care is vigorous and impressive to observe. Compatibility: Classic beginner pike cichlid; keep with robust fish too large to be eaten.
