Geophagus abalios is a moderately sized eartheater from the Orinoco drainage of Venezuela. It displays attractive blue-green iridescent scaling and a subtle lateral spot. A mouthbrooder that benefits from being kept in groups and is generally considered more adaptable than other Geophagus species.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: Minimum 250L, fine sand substrate, open swimming areas with occasional driftwood. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, quality cichlid granules; sifts substrate actively. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive between males; generally peaceful in groups. Compatibility: Compatible with large tetras, plecos, and other peaceful South American cichlids.
