Geophagus brokopondo
Origin: Suriname (Brokopondo region), South America
Geophagus brokopondo is a stunning eartheater from Suriname named after the Brokopondo Reservoir, featuring an olive-green to blue-green body with vivid turquoise-blue spangles and characteristic red-orange markings on the gill covers. This delayed mouthbrooder is relatively hardy compared to many Geophagus, tolerating a wider pH range in captivity. Its rich coloration and engaging behaviour make it a prized specimen.
Provide a large aquarium (300L+) with fine sand substrate. Feed quality pellets, frozen meaty foods, plant matter. Relatively more tolerant of varied water conditions than some Geophagus. Keep in groups of 4+. A delayed mouthbrooder — pairs form during spawning and the female (or male) mouths the eggs and larvae.
