Geophagus proximus is a moderately large and widely distributed eartheater found across both the Amazon and Orinoco river systems. It shares the classic eartheater body plan and continuously sifts through fine sand for food. An active and interesting aquarium fish best maintained in groups over a sandy-bottomed aquarium.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Tank: Minimum 300L, deep fine sand substrate, moderate open swimming space. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, occasional live food. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive between males; peaceful in a group with a stable hierarchy. Compatibility: Compatible with large tetras, plecos, and other medium-large peaceful cichlids.
