Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
Also known as: German Blue Ram, GBR, Ram Cichlid, Butterfly Cichlid
Origin: Captive bred (Germany)
The German Blue Ram represents decades of selective breeding by German aquaculturists who refined the original wild Mikrogeophagus ramirezi into a more intensely coloured, stockier-bodied line that became the standard for captive-bred Rams worldwide. Males display vivid blue iridescence across the body and extended pointed dorsal fin rays, while females show a pink-red ventral patch and slightly smaller size.
Despite its enhanced colouration compared to wild-type fish, the German Blue Ram retains the same demanding water chemistry requirements of the species: warm, soft, slightly acidic water is non-negotiable for long-term health. Fish kept in hard, alkaline water tend to be short-lived and frequently diseased.
For aquarists able to provide soft, warm, high-quality water, the German Blue Ram is a deeply rewarding fish. It shows complex social and breeding behaviour, forms pair bonds, and exhibits shared parental care that is fascinating to observe.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 5.5–7.0, GH below 10; high water quality paramount — low nitrates essential. Tank: 60L minimum for a pair; planted tank with fine substrate; avoid strong currents. Feeding: Omnivore; varied diet of small pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and Daphnia. Breeding: Pair bond; substrate spawner; both parents guard eggs and wrigglers; remove other fish during breeding. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal for soft-water community aquariums with small non-aggressive fish.
