Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Ghost Discus, Translucent Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Ghost Discus is one of the most unusual and rare domestic strains in the discus hobby. Its body appears almost translucent — a pale silver-grey through which the faintest suggestion of body structure is visible — as though the fish exists just at the edge of visibility. The red eye floats within this ghostly form like a glowing lantern.
This strain is extremely sensitive to environmental conditions. The translucent quality of the body makes any internal health issue, stress response, or water quality problem immediately apparent, making the Ghost Discus simultaneously the most demanding and most informative fish in a collection.
Proper husbandry requires near-pristine soft, warm, acidic water, minimal bright light, and a stress-free environment. Kept well, the Ghost Discus is a conversation piece that no other freshwater fish can match.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-6.8, very soft (1-5 dGH), KH 0-3; any water quality lapse is immediately visible on body. Tank: Minimum 250 L, dim lighting, shaded areas via floating plants or overhangs, dark background. Feeding: High-quality protein — white mosquito larvae, mysis, lightly coloured discus pellets; minimal colour enhancers. Breeding: Rare but possible; pair in a dedicated breeding tank at stable 30°C with vertical slate. Compatibility: Species-only or with very gentle companions; any stress is visible and must be avoided.
