Lanistes ovum
Origin: Sub-Saharan Africa
Lanistes ovum is a sizeable freshwater snail from sub-Saharan Africa, recognized by its smooth, glossy ovoid shell in shades of olive-green to brown. Unlike the majority of freshwater snails, Lanistes possesses an operculum and the remarkable ability to survive brief dry periods by sealing itself within its shell — a reflection of its adaptation to the seasonal, periodically desiccating waterways of its native range. In the aquarium it is a peaceful and useful detritivore, scavenging uneaten food, decaying plant matter, and organic debris from the substrate. Its large size makes it visible and interesting to observe, and its shell pattern and coloration are attractive. Suitable for larger freshwater community tanks kept at warmer temperatures.
Provide a spacious aquarium with a soft substrate for partial burrowing and ample calcium-rich food sources for shell maintenance. Feed with algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and fish food remnants. Maintain moderate water hardness to support shell growth — soft water can cause shell erosion over time. Peaceful with all fish; safe with most plants. Avoid tanks with shell-crushing cichlids or aggressive pufferfish.
