About

Hemibagrus wyckioides is distributed across the Mekong, Chao Phraya, and associated major river systems of mainland Southeast Asia, where it inhabits deep, fast-flowing channels and preys on fish, crustaceans, and large invertebrates. It is among the largest members of the family Bagridae, with credible records exceeding 130 cm. Juveniles are attractive, with a warm brown body and long, tapering barbels; adults become massive and intensely predatory.

In the aquarium, growth is rapid — a juvenile may double in size within a year under good conditions. The tank must be correspondingly large, with exceptional filtration capable of processing the enormous biological load this species generates. Tankmates must be chosen carefully; anything smaller than roughly half the catfish's own body length is at serious risk of predation.

Despite its size and power, H. wyckioides can become remarkably tame with regular feeding interaction and will often accept food directly from the keeper's hand. It is a rewarding species for those with the resources to house it correctly, combining impressive physical presence with behavioural complexity.

Care Guide

Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, high O₂; heavy filtration with strong mechanical pre-filtration. Tank: 3 000 L minimum; large smooth caves; minimal internal decor to allow free movement. Feeding: Large whole fish, prawns, earthworms, large carnivore pellets; feed 3–4 times weekly. Breeding: Not achieved in home aquaria; requires hormonal induction and very large breeding pools. Compatibility: Solitary predator; only house with fish of similar or larger size.
