Betta splendens Giant var.
Also known as: Giant Betta, King Betta, Jumbo Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia (Thailand)
The Giant Betta is not a distinct species but a selectively bred size strain of Betta splendens, developed primarily in Thailand over several generations by selectively breeding the largest individuals from each spawn. The result is a fish that can reach 14 cm or more — roughly double the size of a standard male betta — while retaining the full behavioral repertoire and potential color diversity of the broader Betta splendens complex.
Giant Bettas are available in all the same finnage varieties as standard bettas — Halfmoon, Plakat, Crowntail, and others — and in the same extraordinary range of colors and patterns. The scale of the fish is simply larger, making it an impressive display specimen that commands attention even from across a room. The dramatic finnage of a Giant Halfmoon specimen can be genuinely breathtaking.
Because of their larger size, Giant Bettas require more space than standard bettas — a minimum of 40 liters for a single male is recommended, with larger tanks always preferred. They produce more waste and require more food. Otherwise, their husbandry requirements are essentially identical to standard Betta splendens: warm, clean water, solitary male housing, a varied carnivorous diet, and gentle filtration. Giant Bettas are primarily produced by dedicated specialist breeders in Thailand and a few other Southeast Asian countries using multi-generational selective programs that are difficult and time-consuming to maintain. This means that true Giant Bettas from quality lines command higher prices than standard bettas and are not always available from mass commercial suppliers — a hallmark of a genuinely selectively bred speciality variety.
Tank Setup A minimum 40-liter tank for one male due to their larger body size. Gentle filtration with minimal current to protect fins. Heater maintaining 24–30°C. Secure lid essential — large bettas are still capable jumpers. Provide ample plant cover — the larger body size makes sufficient shelter more important than for standard bettas. Avoid sharp decorations.
Water Parameters pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–30°C. Soft to moderately hard water. Weekly 25–30% water changes. Larger body size means proportionally more waste — monitor parameters closely and maintain a well-cycled tank.
Feeding Carnivorous. Feed larger betta pellets, larger frozen foods (full-size bloodworms, adult brine shrimp, krill), and live foods. Their larger size means they need proportionally more food than standard bettas. Feed twice daily, removing uneaten food.
Male Housing Strictly solitary. A single Giant male is impressive enough to justify solo housing. Never house two males together regardless of tank size.
Fin Care If kept in Giant Halfmoon or Crowntail form, the large fins require the same vigilance as standard long-finned bettas — pristine water, no sharp surfaces, no fin-nipping tankmates.
Community Compatibility With appropriately chosen tankmates in adequately sized tanks. Smaller peaceful species may be intimidated by the larger body size of this strain — choose robust but peaceful community fish.
Health Notes Same health concerns as standard bettas. Their larger size may make them more susceptible to bloat and swim bladder issues if overfed. Feed a varied diet and avoid overfeeding.
Long-term Notes Giant Bettas, despite their spectacular size, have similar lifespans to standard bettas — typically 2–4 years with excellent care. Their larger body size means larger waste output and proportionally greater sensitivity to water quality deterioration. Regular large water changes and a well-cycled tank with appropriate filtration capacity for their size are essential throughout their lifespan. Giant Bettas benefit from a larger feeding vessel — standard small betta pellets are appropriate in quantity, but ensuring adequate food volume for the larger body size requires slightly more generous feeding portions than standard bettas.
