Betta splendens
Also known as: Giant Betta, Giant Fighting Fish, King Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
Giant bettas are produced through selective breeding of the largest individuals over multiple generations, resulting in fish that dwarf standard bettas. Their impressive size makes them commanding display fish, but they require proportionally larger tanks and more food than regular bettas. Available in many fin types and colour forms.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — larger body mass requires clean water. Tank: minimum 40L due to size; well-oxygenated with gentle filtration and a heater. Feeding: carnivore — larger betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworms; feed twice daily. Behaviour: males aggressive — one per tank; tend to be calmer in disposition than standard bettas. Compatibility: suitable with robust, peaceful community fish that cannot be bullied or swallowed.
