Stichodactyla gigantea
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Stichodactyla gigantea, the Giant Carpet Anemone, is arguably the most impressive anemone available to marine aquarists, capable of developing an enormous flat oral disc covered in short, densely packed tentacles measuring up to 60 cm in diameter. In premium color morphs — electric blue, vivid green, or deep purple — it is breathtaking under reef lighting. It is a highly effective host for clownfish species including Amphiprion ocellaris, percula, and others that will readily adopt it. However, its powerful stinging cells are capable of capturing and consuming small fish, shrimp, and other invertebrates that stray too close to its disc. Successful long-term care requires extraordinary lighting intensity, strong random water flow, high water quality, and a keeper experienced in demanding marine invertebrates.
Requires a minimum 400-liter aquarium with extremely high-output lighting (PAR 200–400+ at the anemone's position) and strong, random water flow simulating surge conditions. Feed meaty foods 2–3 times per week: frozen mysis, shrimp, silversides, or anemone-specific prepared foods. Ensure ample space away from powerheads and overflow intakes — carpet anemones move and can be drawn into equipment. A wandering anemone that moves frequently indicates inadequate light or water flow. For experienced reef keepers only.
