Devario aequipinnatus
Also known as: Giant Danio
Origin: India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar
Devario aequipinnatus is the classic large danio of the aquarium trade, found across a wide range from India to Myanmar in both slow and fast-flowing waters. Its bold blue-and-yellow horizontal striping and streamlined silver body make it one of the most attractive larger schooling fish available. It is extremely active and can jump, requiring a covered tank. An undemanding, long-lived species that forms the backbone of many river biotope aquaria.
Water: 18–26 °C, pH 6.0–8.0, adaptable to most water conditions. Tank: 150 L minimum; spacious open water, tightly covered tank, planted margins. Feeding: Omnivore — flakes, pellets, live or frozen invertebrates, small insects. Behaviour: Extremely active schooler; keep 6+ and provide plenty of swimming room. Compatibility: Peaceful but fast; may outcompete slow feeders; avoid very small tankmates.
