Thoracocharax securis
Also known as: Giant Hatchetfish
Origin: South America (Peru, Bolivia, Brazil)
Thoracocharax securis, the Giant Hatchetfish, ranges across Peru, Bolivia, and parts of Brazil. At up to 9 cm it dwarfs its hatchetfish relatives and creates a bold visual statement in larger aquariums. Like all hatchetfish, it is a surface dweller and a powerful jumper requiring a very secure lid. Its large size and bold markings make it an impressive species for experienced aquarists.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft and acidic water. Tank: 120 L minimum; absolutely secure lid required; generous surface area with floating plant cover. Feeding: Large floating pellets, freeze-dried insects, live crickets, and waxworms. Behaviour: Peaceful surface schooling species; keep 4–6+; dominant individuals may chase conspecifics. Compatibility: Good with large peaceful mid-water and bottom-dwelling fish; avoid aggressive species.
