Mastacembelus ellipsifer
Also known as: Giant Spiny Eel, Congo Spiny Eel
Origin: Africa
Mastacembelus ellipsifer is found in the Congo River and affiliated lake systems of Central Africa and is one of the largest spiny eel species, reaching 70cm in captivity. Its bold oval-patterned body and large size make it a commanding specimen in a suitably large aquarium. Like all mastacembelids it requires a fine, deep substrate in which to bury itself.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: Minimum 300L, deep fine sand substrate, large PVC hiding tubes, very tight lid. Feeding: Carnivore; large earthworms, prawns, frozen fish flesh, quality sinking pellets. Behaviour: Nocturnal ambush predator; buries completely during the day. Compatibility: Large Congo basin fish; large catfish, robust cichlids; avoid all small fish.
