Giant Synodontis

Synodontis grandiops is among the most impressively sized mochokids, capable of reaching 50 cm or more in large aquariums over many years. It originates from the Congo basin and is a powerful, thick-bodied fish whose fine dark spotting on a grey-brown background becomes more prominent with growth. Its large eyes reflect its preference for low-light conditions.

This species demands a very large aquarium from the outset; housing it in an undersized tank leads to chronic stress, stunted growth, and increased disease susceptibility. Excellent mechanical and biological filtration is non-negotiable given its substantial waste output.

Despite its size it is not overtly predatory toward large companions, though any fish small enough to be swallowed will inevitably be consumed. It is a long-term commitment, potentially living 25 years or more.

Water: 22–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15, KH 2–10). Tank: 600 L minimum; very large caves and overhangs; extremely robust filtration; weekly large water changes. Feeding: Large pellets, prawns, earthworms, fish fillets; hearty appetite requiring substantial daily feeding. Breeding: Not documented in captivity at this scale; extremely challenging. Compatibility: Keep only with robust large fish; any fish under 15 cm may be eaten; suitable with large cichlids, large barbs, arowana.
