About

Sturisoma aureum is a large, stately whiptail catfish from the Orinoco and Magdalena basins of Colombia and Venezuela. Its beautifully banded elongated body, pointed snout, and long caudal filaments make it an unmistakable showpiece. It requires a spacious, mature aquarium with driftwood for resting and is an active algae grazer. Breeding in captivity is well-documented and rewarding.

Care Guide

Water: 23–27°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 2–15). Tank: 150 L minimum; smooth driftwood essential for resting; gentle to moderate flow. Feeding: Algae and biofilm; supplement with algae wafers, blanched zucchini, and cucumber. Behaviour: Peaceful; solitary or in pairs; grazes actively on surfaces. Compatibility: Excellent with cichlids, larger tetras, and other peaceful community fish.
