Cyphotilapia gibberosa
Also known as: Gibberosa Frontosa, Southern Frontosa
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Cyphotilapia gibberosa is a large, deep-water cichlid from the southern basin of Lake Tanganyika, closely related to C. frontosa but recognised as a distinct species. Adult males develop a massive cranial hump and vivid blue-and-white striping. A slow, deliberate predator that feeds primarily on fish and invertebrates in the wild, best kept as a colony in a species or near-species tank.
Water: 24-26°C, pH 7.8-9.0, GH 10-18, KH 8-16; very stable chemistry essential. Tank: 500L+ for a group of 6; provide large flat rocks and open swimming space. Feeding: High-quality carnivore pellet, frozen krill, lance fish; feed 2-3 times per week. Behaviour: Colony-living; males dominant but relatively peaceful toward tankmates; slow-moving. Compatibility: Other large, peaceful Tanganyika species such as Xenotilapia or Cyathopharynx.
