Apistogramma gibbiceps
Origin: Peru, Brazil (Upper Amazon)
Apistogramma gibbiceps is a rare and distinctive dwarf cichlid from the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon, recognizable by the male's striking high-backed profile and vivid blue-spotted dorsal fin that fans dramatically during display. It thrives in soft, acidic water with dense planting and caves that mimic its natural blackwater leaf-litter habitat. Pairs form tight, protective bonds over a chosen cave site. A highly sought-after species for serious Apistogramma enthusiasts.
Maintain soft, acidic water (pH 5.0–6.8, GH 1–8, KH 0–3) at 25–29°C. Provide a densely planted aquarium with coconut hides, driftwood, and leaf litter. Keep as a pair or harem (1 male, 2–3 females) with gentle, small tankmates like pencilfish or small tetras. Feed live or frozen small invertebrates — Artemia, Daphnia, micro worms. Perform regular small water changes with RO or very soft tapwater.
