Protopterus amphibius
Also known as: Gilled African Lungfish, East African Lungfish, Amphibius Lungfish
Origin: Africa
Protopterus amphibius is found in coastal lowland rivers of Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique, inhabiting temporary pools that dry completely during the dry season. It is the smallest Protopterus species, rarely exceeding 44cm, and is distinguished by prominent external gill tufts retained throughout life. It survives drought by secreting a mucous cocoon and is capable of surviving in dried mud for extended periods. Extremely rarely available; requires specialist care identical to its larger relatives but in a somewhat smaller tank.
Water: 24-30°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard; surface access for air breathing is mandatory. Tank: Minimum 200L; deep fine substrate for burrowing; secure lid essential. Feeding: Carnivore; small earthworms, bloodworms, shrimp, small fish pieces; sinking pellets. Breeding: No records of captive breeding; burrow nest in the wild. Compatibility: Solo only; aggressive and capable of biting despite small size.
