Danio rerio var. (transgenic — red)
Also known as: GloFish Danio Starfire Red, Red GloFish
Origin: South Asia (captive-bred, transgenic)
GloFish Danios are transgenic forms of Danio rerio originally developed in Singapore for environmental pollution research. The Starfire Red variety expresses a red fluorescent protein derived from sea anemone genetics, causing the fish to glow brilliantly red under both white and UV light. They retain all the hardiness, peaceful nature, and active schooling behaviour of standard Zebra Danios and are fully sterile in most markets.
Water: 18–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness (GH 5–20). Tank: 60 L minimum; standard community setup; striking under both white and UV/blue lighting. Feeding: Omnivore; high-quality flake or micro-pellets; frozen daphnia and brine shrimp. Behaviour: Peaceful active schooler; keep in groups of 6+; mix with other GloFish varieties for a vivid display. Compatibility: Excellent with all peaceful community fish; avoid fin-nippers.
