Hemigrammus erythrozonus
Also known as: Glowlight Tetra, Glo-Light Tetra
Origin: Essequibo River basin, Guyana, South America

The Glowlight Tetra (Hemigrammus erythrozonus) is native to the Essequibo River basin in Guyana, South America, where it inhabits slow-moving, heavily vegetated tributaries and blackwater streams with soft, slightly acidic, tannin-stained water. First introduced to the aquarium hobby in the 1930s, it has remained one of the most popular and enduring tetra species ever since.
The species derives its common name from the remarkable iridescent stripe that runs from the tip of the snout to the base of the caudal fin — a vivid orange-red to copper-gold line that appears to glow with an inner fire, particularly stunning under aquarium lighting. The body is semi-transparent silver, making the neon-bright stripe the visual focal point of the fish. The dorsal fin has a white tip with a bright orange-red spot at its base, adding further detail.
Males are slimmer; females are noticeably rounder and larger-bodied, particularly when gravid. Both sexes share the characteristic glowing stripe, though males may show slightly brighter coloration during courtship.
Glowlight Tetras are ideal schooling fish for community aquariums. They are peaceful, hardy, and relatively undemanding compared to some other tetras, making them an excellent choice for aquarists of all experience levels. In a school of 10 or more, the collective effect of their synchronized swimming and glowing stripes is truly spectacular.
Glowlight Tetras are among the hardier tetra species, adapting well to pH 5.5–7.5, hardness 1–15 dGH, and temperatures 22–28°C. While they tolerate moderate conditions, the most vibrant coloration develops in soft, slightly acidic, blackwater-style aquariums.
A minimum 60-liter planted aquarium suits a group of 8–10. Provide a dark substrate, driftwood, dried leaf litter (Indian almond leaves enhance the natural environment), and dense plantings of fine-leaved plants. Subdued lighting highlights the glowing stripe to maximum effect. Gentle current or still water replicates their natural habitat.
Feed a varied diet of quality flake food, micro pellets, and small live or frozen foods: daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro worms, and cyclops. They are enthusiastic feeders that accept most standard aquarium foods readily.
Glowlight Tetras are entirely peaceful and suitable with virtually all community species: other tetras, rasboras, corydoras, small catfish, livebearers, small gouramis, and peaceful dwarf cichlids. Avoid housing with fin-nippers or aggressive species.
Keep in groups of at least 8 for confident schooling behavior, with 12–15+ being ideal. Water changes of 25–30% weekly maintain water quality and encourage the best coloration and health.
